Underground room lighting...

Just after a bit of advice for lighting an old air raid shelter which is under the floor of my house. Planning on making it into a bit of room for the kids to use for hanging out in....my kids by the way..

Its about 3 meters by 3 meters by 2.5m ceiling height. My initial thoughts were fluorescents, would two four foot twins be overkill or not enough? Or would a different type of lighting be more suitable?

Two single tubes would be plenty.
But I would be tempted to go down the theme of air raid shelter lighting, lanterns perhaps.

Yes, or something from the Coughtrie die-cast range perhaps. The SP & SW series have barely changed design since 1940! Unfortunately they've gone up in price a little though

P.S. To make it look "right" it would have to be done in surface mounted steel conduit with something like this for a switch...

I've encountered many original fittings on military bases which were just like that!

Managed to "find" a 5ft twin at work which I have put a lead on and plugged in temporarily, plenty bright enough to do paint the walls etc, but do like those lanterns and switches for a more authentic look
