I'm having solid oak 18 mm flooring laid in the hallway onto existing floorboards. In getting quotes from professional fitters I'm being told by some that underlay is needed yet others say it isn't. I'd be grateful of some clarification.

Depends on the installation method they plan to use: secret nailing = no underlayment; floating = underlayment (without DPM!)
