I have used Ronseal one-coat all surface primer (two coats) followed by two coats of Rusto-oleum white chalk paint. The 2nd layer of the chalk paint went on tacky so I used a mini glossing roller instead. Came up well with good coverage and I will be rolling the other pieces I am doing. I am waiting on Polyvine wax finish dead matt varnish arriving from Amazon. Apparently this works well with the chalk paint. HTH

I have applied the varnish and it goes on easily with a brush on the chalk paint with no lifting but I don't know how durable it will be. It states on the bottle that 2 coats satin with 2 coats dead matt would be better for durability. The furniture is definitely matt with no glean. I may try another durable varnish on top
