Hi,

I am having trouble with our landing light. Every time i change the bulb it pops the element after 1 to 2 hours of use. I have changed the bulb holder and ceiling connector, but it is still doing the same thing. Light is controlled from switches upstairs and downstairs

Any suggestions please?

Tks

Could it be vibration ?

Have you bought cheap lamps, that might be failure items ?

more info needed:

what kind of lamps are they
e.g.
12V? 240V? halogen? (you know not to tuch the glass if they are right?) any +other info you can give.

Gents,

The lights are not cheap and the bulbs are not being touched. All the wires in the lamp look fine. There are two wires entering the connector. One base a double wire, live and earth. The other is just a single neutral wire for the switch. Nothing to complicated.

I have changed the bulb several times and each time the bulb last up to a max 2 hours. Vibration I feel is not an issue as the last bulb went during the night.

Tks

What type of lamps are they? What type of fitting? Is there enough room for heat to dissipate?
Can you upload some piccys?

The fitting is just a standard B & Q light fitting. White ceiling connector, 10" cable and White bulb holder.

Is it just this one or do other lamps pop after 1 or 2 hrs use?
Maybe worth popping an energy saving lamp in.

Have you by any chance brought a load of 110volt lamps?

Gosh these lamps are bright, but they don't last long :(

Its is just this light, all other lights in the house are fine.

The bulbs i have bought are not cheap and are for 240v supply.

I have tried a range of bulbs from standard 60w bulbs to the new style energy saving bulbs, all blow after a few hours of use.

I am totally stumped on this one.

Are you in a position to measure the voltage at the lamp fitting?
I'd be interested to see what it is, one would assume it must be quite high!

Presumably you don't have problems with lamps blowing elsewhere in the house.

Is it possible that a dodgy dimmer switch with a particularly inductive load on it is spiking the lighting circuit maybe? Or indeed something else causing large spikes on the lighting circuit?

Other than that, I'm out of ideas.

Might seem a strange question, but have you noticed any airborne activity from the jets at RAF Coltishall, when these failure's occur?
There was a case in Yorkshire many years ago, when the electrics of a house close to a RAF airfield kept suffering unnacountable electric problems, turned out to be from aircraft mounted radar!
