So our cabin modifications are all signed off. We went with steel, so a 6.4m 254x146x31 UC RSJ resting on 10cm deep nibs in our wall:
The SE was happy we replace the 200x47 with something of the same support area so we are likely to have a supporting area approx 210mm wide, e.g. 3 70mm timbers side by side. I know putting RSJs on (old) brick you often use concrete padstones to support the load; the engineer has not specified it but should I do similar to spread the load from the 146mm wide steel over the 210? Or is that just serving no purpose?
I was thinking I don't want to put a concrete block up there, maybe I could get some 10/12mm steel plates made say 210x130mm.
