Using Matt emulsion as a base coat to hardboard

Just wondering if some Matt emulsion would work as a base coat to hardboard before applying satinwood?

I have used the hardboard to block a lightwell above a door which is no longer wanted and so I'm treating the hardboard in the same way as the joinery.

I'd paint both sides as it will warp like crazy
