How are Utility Room fans usually wired?

Fused spur so require an on/off switch?
Or connected to lights so come may not come on in the day when lights not needed?

Thanks!

Extractor fans are wired via an isolator for maintenance purposes. They are normally connected to the switched live of the lighting circuit.

What happens if one needs ventilation during the day? i.e. clothes on radiator, etc

I guess you can switch the light on?

On second thoughts; why does a utility room need an extractor? is this common/typical?

utility rooms commonly contain sinks and laundry equipment. Many condensing driers emit a certain amount of steam. In this house the laundrywoman does the ironing in the futility room, which generates some steam. Some people like to drape wet washing, or to hang up damp stuff.

clothes on radiator, etc

An extractor fan can remove all that water vapour.

Thanks. Defo getting an extractor.

Just can't decide on which is the lessor of of 2 evils.

1. On with light. Must have light on, but unlikely to be left on by accident...
2. Independent. But might forget to turn it off...

one with a light is fine. Most likely to get switched on. If you have a modern extractor with a ball-bearing motor it will be very quiet and use negligible electricity. If you have an LED lamp it uses negligible electricity.

So if it is left on, either accidentally or because the person is conscious of a damp room, it won't do any harm.
