We have a Vaillant Combi boiler which is not heating the water or making the heating come on. Only when you take the main silver case slightly off to let some air in it then ignites and we can use both the heating & the water. Our plumber has so far replaced the diverter valve and the air pressure switch but this has still not solved the problem. The Flue doesnt appear to be blocked either. It is roughly 3/4 years old. Can anyone help?

Firstly get an engineer in who knows what he is doing, or at least honest enough to say he doesn't

This sounds like an fan/flue fault or air/gas mixture ratio fault to me, hence why it works when the case is dislodged, which it should NOT be used whilst not fixed properly.

God only knows why the DV should have been suspect, with all the info you have given us :?

What Vaillant boiler is it?

In this case the first thing your engineer should do is check/clean the fan venturis.

i phoned the vaillant helpline at 50p per minute!!! and they suggested the installer should check the combination seal. When i suggested this to the plumber i dont think he had a clue. Could it be do with this or do you think its more likley to be a problem with the fan?

This is a classic fan venturi fault description, so I would suggest he tries this first.

If it was the seal then it would not work when the chamber was opened as a worn/broken seal would be simulating the door off.

Main thing is though, get a different engineer in to fix it. As you say. this bloke sounds like he knows nothing

Best keep his number for when you need a tap washer replaced

You probably wont believe it, but he was the plumber who installed it. i will see if he can fix it with your advice but if not will get someone else in. :?
