Out of interest, how much did they charge you? The cracked main heat exchanger might have been picked up on a service - just for future reference.

So Vaillant will charge me £95 for the call out. We had the boiler serviced by the installers who put it in - not Vaillant direct.

Yes I get that, but what I’m saying is if this has been cracked a while, it should show high readings when they analyse the flue on the service, regardless of who serviced it.
The OPs "regular engineer" is clearly useless.
The cracked flue collector behind the heat exchanger has been a well known issue for at least 10 years, I guess they've not bothered to take the chamber cover off.
