Looked up some of my old cars.

One, an Alfa, I was horrified to find ended its life painted purple, when it was born green.

My Beetle is still alive, but is SORN'd.

A couple of cars that were insurance write-offs lived on for a few more years, as did a couple of trade-ins.

Indeed. And if it's not SORN'd, you can pretty much say that the date of liability is either:

(a) when it was scrapped

(b) when it was stuffed into a barn (wishful thinking)

(c) when it was sold to a taxi driver in Moss Side who is still driving it around with no tax, ins or MOT.

Or it could mean that it now carries a different registration mark. I ran this on my old Astra which had a T plate on it. Nothing comes up (other than what you got), but I know the guy that has it now and it has a private plate on it which does come up.

So that means its declared off road - but still insured? i.e even if your car is offroad it must be insured. Worst case if he got pulled they would seize the car, but if he was in a crash the insurance would pay up?

I'd hate to think of the polo being scrapped, but its off that age. It was the last of the 1.3l engines too and was totally reliable.

Your car can be SORN'ed and not insured. It's only if the vehicle has an expired VED and isn't insured that it's illegal (obviously illegal with a valid VED and uninsured).
My mate isn't driving as it's getting work done on it just now.
