Or is it due to habit, something you do 'unconscious' and then stop to think and try to remember if you really did lock things? (But I have the same with locking front-doors, always check them in evening before I go to bed. Even drove back 6 miles once to check if I indeed had locked the door of our former shop, how pre-occupied is that?)
