Recently our upstairs toilet makes a very loud noise about 5-10 seconds after flushing. It shounds just like a large ship's fog-horn sort of a large paaarppppp.

It is very loud throughout the house and means we can't flush it when the kids are asleep.

Any suggestions ?

The noise you are hearing is Water Hammer and is caused by the water passing between the cone and the diaphram in the Ballvalve.

You can either turn down the water pressure if the WC has an isolator or fit a "torbec" valve

that will see you right

Is that because something is worn, i.e now 15 years old and due for replacement ?

I am also getting a small leak from the overflow outside and also from the fitting where the overflow pipe enters the bottom of the toilet.

It's a Armitage Shanks toilet if that makes any difference.

A US site recommended changing the ballvalve and flapper as they are likely worn/damaged.

It wont be the Flapper mate, Pop and TORBEC type ballvale on it and it will be grand.
