Hi all,

First of all a thank you to all of you who post here and make this forum what it is, it offers lots of us a lifeline.

Anyway, both the front and back garden walls of my property are looking very scruffy indeed. Over the years coat after coat of paint has been applied all of which is now peeling. This is true to the extent that the mortar can barely be distinguished between each course.

Added to that is a lot of green slime and moss making it look dreadful. Having just bought the property I am determined to sort it as it stares me in the face evertime I enter or leave the house.

I have considered a wire brush but the layers that are cracked and peeling are just too thick. Another option I came up with was to pressure wash it.

As it stands I cant even see how I would be able to render over it, any help or suggestions would be really gratefully received,

Thanks in advance,
Pax

Hi

First of all which way are your front and back wall facing North, South???Are you walls brick or concrete?
What paint have you before used on your walls?

Hi mate,

The front faces North and the back faces South. The front rarely gets the sun so the walls tend to take a long time to dry out after rain. The back walls forms the boundary of the back yard.

I have recently moved into the property and have not applied anything as yet, the walls are covered in years worth of exterior paint.
The walls are of brick construction.

Hope this helps,

PAx

Hi mate

I have the same problem!
proberly best wait till may or june to do this and wait for a week thats going to be fairly dry (hard i know in this country!!!)
What i did was use the pressure washer and used the little syphon at the side and dipped that into some patio/path;. To clean the stubburn bits use a wire brush!!

Leave a day or so and let the walls dry out
Then apply some thompson water seal on the brick work (this stop the water going into the bricks!)
Use 2 coats (boring i know but i has to be done  )
Then make sure you use a quality masonary paint.
I use sandex masonary paint

Hope this helps and good luck :D
