Had 2 different Dulux Trade vinyl matt 5lt-bought at different stores around the same time, one is the old formula the other is a new formula with a higher pigment so that it covers better-according to Dulux it is because there were too many complaints about the old! I was told I would be fine if I watered the new one down 5%.

Anyway I did my first coat with the old and the stuff sailed on and dried perfect overnight. Top coat with the new and had every problem. Had watered the paint down 10% and then 15% and then 20%. Tried different rollers on different walls...but still it went on very thick and difficult to roll out no matter what I tried. Is this typical of the new formula or is it some reaction to the old formula as it was like puttting a second coat of matt on silk ( a mistake I once made). I need to put a 3rd coat on...any suggestions of how I should proceed would be appreciated. How much should I water down? Should I go back to the old formula?

I had similar trouble with a Crown diy emulsion....was better with brushing ,only just  but the trade outlet guy said .......don`t just stir the paint, beat it  cuz they put something in them to make them "gluey" for the diy`ers ...because they tend to scrub the paint on with a brush........and a pro will stroke it on then lay-off using a 6 inch brush (done it years ago working with my dad) In the end I got the Crown colour copied onto a trade emulsion

Thanks lads. I asked Dulux trade center and they phoned ICI and the reply was just water the paint down further. At 20% already I wonder how much? I was thinking about usung a brush and shall have a thnk

As I have one coat on of the old formula which was easy and one coat of the new which isn't...I might see if I can get another of the old formula. Try a wall with a roller and then if I have probs try a brush (and a bucket of water)!

I have always added 10-15% to Dulux trade, it`s well thick.
