Hi, I removed the stopper at the side of the pump on my boiler (vokera compact 24) to drain it before fitting a new sensor. I spoke to a local gas fitter who told me to use the safety valve to empty the boiler but I couldn't work out how to do it, I had assumed it would be operated like a tap.
After I refitted the stopper I went to refill the boiler and now the water is going straight outside. Have I somehow opened the safety valve and if so can I reset it or will I have to fit a new safety valve?

It is bad practice to drain via a PRV(although Vokera say to do it) and it may now require renewal due to debris under valve seating.Try opening/closing valve a few times and if not sealing correctly then replace the valve as a complete part.

like the last poster i agree, its very easy to bump the safety valve and once it starts passing may need replaced.
id like to hear what someone else says but a few times ive had sucess by taking the black lever off, removing the red head from the prv and using a plain screwdriver to screw the aluminium head further in before re-assembling in reverse to cure the passing valve. Could also remove it completly to clean any debris but in the end will probably require a replacement.

That sounds as if it may be increasing the operating pressure.

If it has a metal internal shaft sometimes taping on the end will help.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replys. The problem I have is that I don't know how to reset the valve. There was no black plastick strip on it, there never has been, don't know why. I have had the red head off and can't see any way of manipulating the valve. Could you tell me exactly what I have to do to close it?
If I have to I will replace it but Heat Spares closes at 12 and I don't know if I'll make it. A quick fix till Monday would be good. Cheers

you need a new one. the seat can be twisted round on these which effectively alters the pressure at which it starts letting by, you seem to have done this.

i don't like these types of prv and generally fit the type that fit alpha's.

Managed to get a new valve and I noticed that the the red head has 3bar written on it. The valve that I have just taken off has 1bar written on it. Was that the wrong valve that has been on it all this time?

I have just fitted the new valve. What do I do now? Do I take off the black plastic strip and depress the pin?

Yes. 1 bar pressure relief valve? Rare as hens' teeth.

Do I take off the black plastic strip and depress the pin?
NO.
If you don't know what you're doing, leave it to someone who does. It's a safety component on a gas apppliance.

Give me a break. I've already replaced the thermisters and now I've replaced the valve. All I want to do is find out how to depress the pin to close the valve so I can fill the boiler with water and see if I have solved my problem.
If not I've already got a card for a guy from FJL Gas Services who is going to come out if this doesn't fix the initial problem.
