VW Golf (2002) starting problem

Any advice on problem with VW Golf 1.6 (02 plate) would be appreciated. Summary of problem is as follows:
- when trying to start it turns over but just won't kick in
- took to mechanic who changed battery and spark plugs. (I also had the timing chain fixed as done 98,000 on clock)
- Car still erratic in starting. Sometimes OK others nothing. No ryhme or reason
- Diagnostic analysis on car suggested thermol sensor so got this changed along with crankshaft sensor
- Car erratic at starting

I've got a 6 month old daughter and just don't feel safe taking the car out as I don't know if I'll be able to start it or not.

Has anyone had similar or any ideas?

Could just be a dodgy ignition barrel.
When you switch it on the ignition powers up the ignition live, then when turned to start the engine it drops the ignition live out, seen it before on a VW.
Your mechanic should be able to test for this relatively easily.

Did look into the ignition switch along with immobiliser and key chip but didn't work.
