VW Golf 2005 - Noise when slowing

Hello

I bought a 2005 reg VW Golf in February. It is a very well looked after car, only 47,000 on the clock, and runs perfectly - cost about £3,000. I know next to nothing about cars, so feel free to talk to me like I'm stupid when explaining the problem to me (if you know what it is).

Recently I can sometimes hear the noise of something revolving. It only seems to happen when I've been on the Motorway and I'm coming to a stop after coming off at the junction - so I think it is when I have been travelling at high speed. My girlfriend reckons it's coming from the back of the car.

The only way I can describe it is that it sounds like something that has been revolving really fast coming to a stop and you can hear the last few seconds of it revolutions - a bit like rolling a round pen across your desk (random example but closest noise I could come up with). Then, when the lights go green and I accelerate, I can hear the same noise but with the revolutions getting faster - but again, only for a few seconds.

Hopefully it's something I can fix with a bit of WD40, or just tighten it up with a spanner - but also want to make sure something isn't about to fall off. Whatever it is doesn't appear to be affecting the performance of the car as it still runs smoothly - I just want to nip whatever it is in the bud.

Thanks in advance

Sounds like a wheel bearing is going. Probably not a job that you could do yourself. Take it somewhere like KwikFit just for the free examination and get a quote. Then go elsewhere!

Thanks - ill do that!

How much do you reckon it should be, roughly? And is it urgent or can it wait until the end of the month till pay day?

Possibly £80-£120. Could be dangerous so get it checked as soon as.
