Looking to find my wife another automatic car in the near future, needs to be 1600cc to 2000cc, a pal at work suggested the vw golf, 2006 to 2008 era. Don't mind if its diesel or petrol. Anyone have any knowledge of auto golfs from this era?

VW Golf automatic.

We're about to take delivery of a new Golf. I opted for a manual transmission as I had heard that automatic gearboxes become very expensive indeed to repair or replace once they are becoming troublesome, and I think this applies to any make and model.
I assume that I made the right decision, but I'm sure someone will either confirm or deny my suspicions!

Cheaper than the dual clutches and gearbox service every 37500 miles.
I mulled this over when choosing our newest family run around, ended up with a Ford Mk2 Kuga Powershift.
It has a dual clutch gearbox (very similar to DSG) and is a joy to drive and tow the caravan with.
Gearbox services are every 50,000 miles. I did ours myself last year, cost £140 in Genuine Ford oil + Filter and an hour of my time (plus I know it had been done right).
Deffinitely don't regret buying a dual clutch.
A work mate has a BMW 335D DCT, 160000 miles and still going strong.
Horses for coarses but I won't be going back to a manual.

The keywords here are dual CLUTCH as opposed to a fully automatic. There are conditions where having to creep the car under load (such as manoeuvring a heavy trailer) where wear will take place as in a conventional clutch, just a lot more expensive to replace. I've had full autos for more years / cars than I can remember, as well as driving buses / coaches when I was working & only had one 'box let me down & that was because I abused it.

According to Ford ETIS, the gearbox service is 37500 miles or 3 years, whichever is sooner. Don't wait until 50k!
I've just looked on ETIS and it does indeed say 37500 miles!, I asked Ford dealership and they said 37500 on Mk1 Kuga Powershift and 50,000 for the Mk2 Kuga Powershift.
It did look past it's best and considering it had "full service history" when I bought it luckily I did engine and gearbox oils for my own peace of mind..
