WAC cistern not flashing

My cistern fills up alright but it does not flash into the pan. Does anybody have an idea as to the reason why this is happening?

Can you remove the cistern lid easily?

A picture would help greatly.

If not, can you say what type of setup you have inside?

Is it a push button cistern?

If so, does it have the button on the top or the front/side?

Or is it a lever type?

Looks like the link is attached and the water level seems okay (albeit difficult to tell from the pic)

When you pull the lever, does it pull up the link (the bit which is situated on the end of the lever rod assembly)

It could be a variety of things but, subject to what the experts on here say, it could well be the flap valve which has worn/failed.

How confident are you with DIY and is the water supply to the cistern easily shut off?

Thanks Belboz. Yes the water supply can be easily shut. I must confess I have never disassemble a cistern before. You may be right about the flap valve being worn out or failed. I realise that when I push the ball down manually to increase the hydrostatic pressure, the cistern flushes alright. Also when I adjust the ball such that the cistern starts overflowing into the pan, it flushes alright but when set at the normal level it doesn't.

Seems like it may well be the flap valve.

Replacing it will mean cistern dis-assembly but that is not a difficult job if you take your time.

Have a look at the below link and the link below that. Those should give you some food for thought. I changed my old syphon valve donkeys ages ago but there is too much to post here to advise hence the links.

If I were you, I would seriously consider fitting a new type of valve whilst you are at it.

A simpler valve type with a nice push-button flush would cost next to nothing and is relatively easy to fit.

As a matter of interest:

Did he replace with a new type?

How long was he there and how much did he charge? (hope 'er indoors paid for it....!!)

The plumber spent about 20 mins. He replace the siphon system with a new one, changed the inlet tap connector and charged 80 quid.
