i am adding a new washing machine to an existing kitchen, would it be ok to take a spur from the ring main with a socket located behind the appliance or does the appliance need to be added to the ring main? thanks

It is ok to run a washer off a spurred socket, but you need to have easy access to it.

the isolating switch should be in ready access (not concealed , and not behind the appliance) so that you can turn it off if, for example, it catches fire, squirts water, drags a child inside while spinning, or gives someone an electric shock.

there are various ways of doing it.

Electrical work in a kitchen is notifiable as the presence of water and electricity makes it more dangerous than most other rooms.
