Sorry if this is a silly question, my wife has given some old chairs a base coat of eggshell and wants to use a wall and ceiling matt paint on top, any know if this is likely to work?

Matt emulsion will not live up to the wear that the chairs will face. I would carry on with an oil eggshell as it will be harder wearing and will give a nice finish.
