I have been watching Big Clive on this subject and he shows how using wall plate dimmers can shorten the life of many LED's and simply not work with others.
He points out how the smoothing capacitor will normally slowly charge and discharge at same speed as the AC frequency, but with a dimmer they are charged for only part of the cycle so likely damaging both the resistors and capacitors. His explanation seems good, so it seems the dimmer switch has had its day?
