Replace the 60W bulb with a 100W. :D
Is the whole lot panelled - i.e. to the ceiling?

Damn he beat me to it!

Obviously light coloured paint for a start..walls ceilings and wood work...but also the use of some well placed large mirrors to relflect natural light is an idea..for days when you dont want the lights on.

Natural light gives quite a calm effect...and its free...(at the moment)..get in quick before the b*st*rds tax that too

I would use extra lights and mirrors. In a few years, you may find dark panelling is back in fashion, then you will be pleased with it.

We did have mirrors on the bedroom ceiling but the wife made me take them down...she hates to see me enjoying myself!
