Was this in line with regs?

I've just swapped over some sockets and the wiring on one had me wondering whether it was correct.

Two sockets, one either side of a stud wall, a foot apart or so. The two wires coming up from the ring main. One wire in to one socket, the other wire in to the other socket, and a seperate piece of wire connecting the two sockets.

I've changed it to a proper spur, but wondered if the previous wiring was ok! :?

Sounds ok to me.

Just for reference - cables contain wires. So you had 2 cables presumably? It's just that it helps when trying to understand what is being described. No offence.

The cable routing was perfectly OK before as a ring goes from socket to socket. Both sockets were on the ring as is best. Now one of them is on the ring and the other is a spur. The fewer spurs the better

I totally agree. Assuming that there were both on the ring (and not part of a 'string of spurs!), it was better as it was, although it is now still compliant with regs.

Kind Regards, John

Sorry, yes, two cables. Can you tell I'm a DIY'er? lol

Thanks for the replies guys. I should have asked before I'd changed it. But at least I've learnt for next time. :)

You really shouldn't be doing electrical work if you don't even know how sockets are wired.

If you'd been installing those sockets from scratch, and wanted them both on the ring, how would you have done it?

Please take some time out and do some learning.

I wouldn't have installed the sockets from scratch because I wouldn't know how to. I do know spurring once off a socket on the ring main is acceptable and safe, hence why I did it.

But.....

So you don't know how socket circuits are wired, but decided to alter the wiring of one because it didn't look right to you?

What do you think the word "ring" means?

Well, it's not too late to change it back is it?
