Can you anyone offer advice? For the last 2/3 days my washing machine has been filling with dirty water when not in use. This only seems to occur after I have washed up in the kitchen sink. There have been heavy rains in this area and this problem has only occurred since then.

You have a partial blockage in your sink/washing machine drain pipe its overloading and backing back up flowing back into the washing machine clear your drain pipes and that will cure the problem.

Thanks very much... would you suggest getting a load of bleach down the drains or something more?

I have never known bleach be very effective and yet to be convinced the likes of mr muscle drainer unblocker can be much good. However may be worth a try but I suspect in the end you may have to unscrew u bend or trap and use a flexible rod or similar to be effective.

If your washing machine drain is connectd to the sink drain under the sink, check the routing of the W/M drain pipe - it should be raised slightly before is goes down to the W/M.
