Have just bought a new waste disposal unit, which will be fitted to new kitchen (no excising plumbing as yet). Should the discharge from the waste be routed to the exterior drainage system and exit above the grill or below. The instructions do not state. Many years ago when I installed a waste disposal the instruction said discharge below the grill.

As far as I know it does not matter as long as there is an air gap between water in drain and bottom of waste pipe.
I would personally cut out the circle in the plastic grill and put pipe through ensuring the air gap is present. :)
