Hi people. I noticed that there was a stain on my downstairs ceiling which was caused by a leak which is now fixed but the stain can't be painted over by emulsion what do i do???

Dont use gloss it will show different when emulsioned over. Use either oil based undercoat or a spray on stain block.

doesn't that make the ceiling shiny like gloss

Gloss is too shiny for the emulsion, use the oilbase UC like Op said, and when dry you can either spot the area with your emulsion a couple times, or if the new area stands out, still spot with the emulsion, then give the ceiling another coat

use an oil based undercoat then.

i'll stick to building an keep me big nose out.

Lol, your on the right track with the oilbase, :D and I daresay the gloss would be okay for a small area, but its not advisable to use gloss on the whole ceiling, as you would undercoat it if you wanted to stop nicotene bleeding through for example.
The UC has a matt finish, so any emulsion would stick to it okay, but gloss is dodgy.
