What is the best (dog and animal friendly) weed killer to use have just dug over a patch in the garden and there are a lot of ivy roots and roots in the soil. Not thinking of planting anything at the moment but the wife is going to put plants and things in pots on the patch. Thanks for your help ;)

Garden fork and a bit of elbow grease. ;) Then cover with a membrane for a while.

The main child and pet friendly weed killer is glyphosate but it only works on actively growing plants, and probably not on ivy. Anything stronger is likely to leave a residue so is not conducive to replanting or being played with by pets/kids.

That's just my ha'p'orth though...

weedkiller will not work on roots, you need foliage for it to be absorbed.

A neighbour poured boiling water on an ants nest in the lawn, it killed the grass stone dead!
