Hi Guys,

Some friends are moving and they have given me a box full of plugs that have been cut off appliances they have thrown away over the years. All are re-useable and in good condition. I’ve come across one that’s really intrigued me, it’s an MK plug but rather than having the MK logo on the top it’s got the old Granada TV logo on it. Is it known for MK to make plugs with other company logos on or am I likely to have one from a rare batch.

I'll try and get a pic uploaded tomorrow for you.

All the best
Dan :)

couldnt wait until tomorrow :D

Here's the pic:

I believe Granada used to have a TV rental business, maybe it was branded for their stock.

they list ones with "hospital property" on them in thier standard catalog!

i'm sure i've seen a plugtop logo'd "BBC" before (i think it was a recessed logo with a color in the bottom) though i can't remember if it was a MK style.

I think most manufacturers become pretty flexible once you become as big as grandada. Companies like stuff to be marked to reduce losses (both intentional pilfering and unintentional mixups of different companies gear at joint events) and a moulded in mark looks so much more proffessional and is so much harder to remove than any form of stick on label.

Pilfering (as an employer, unless employees ask the word is stealing  )is the main reason. In the 70's-80's London Underground used reversed earth pins on all sockets, 110V on all BC lamps and ES on all 230V for this reason.

What they were trying to stop was the re-sale of their stolen plugs/lamps

Hi Plugwash & Pensdown,

I was aware of the "hospital property" ones, I've actually got a few and no they were not aquired from any hospitals before anyone asks lol! The BBC one would be interesting to come by, how sad i must sound saying that :D . I can see the reason for branding the plugs, just makes it look that little more professional and as its been mentioned cuts down on the likelihood of theft.

All the best
Dan

I'm off to bed now lol.

I'm sure I've got an old BBC MK plugtop in my garage somewhere.

I'll try and dig it out for a photo tomorrow.

It is the same as the NHS ones.

IIRC Canford used to sell them. Not sure if they still do?

out of interest does anyone have any idea just how big an order you have to make to get customised moulded names or logos moulded into your plugtops?

I've seen the same plug tops with 'BT' or 'Telecomm' logos, and with the MoD 'broad arrow' logo moulded on them.

Some plug tops used to have logos screen printed onto them until someone found out the ink came off easily with a drop of thinners on a rag.

Wasn't that done to prevent unauthorsed / un tested / non PAT cert kit being plugged in to there supply.

Hence why on platforms you see such sockets for cleaners to use, but king chav can't re-charge his laptop or mobile due to reverse pin format.

As a safety precaution, please remove all tails of flex from your standard plugtops, in case little hands get hold of them.

Taking the fuse out too is also wise, as even though it's plugged in, the missing fuse will mean no current flow.
