Hi all, just found this website and forum, hope somebody might be able to help as im freezing to death

We have a baxi back boiler, we have lived in this ex council house for 15 years and so the heating system and boiler is quite old although we don't know how old. The heating has always been noisy and temperamental although the hot water has always been fine. Now the heating has decided it's going to give up the ghost completely but the pump is still working?
Hubby is good at diy and is mechanically minded and has tried the normal, bleeding, draining, controls etc... but has come to the point of submission, we can't afford an engineer and was hoping of a little knowledge from someone, it would be very much appreciated as im very cold! Thank you :)

it's not pressurised it's an open vent, hubby balanced all the rads on sunday and it was working quite well, yesterday it decided no heat at all...maybe a blockage? I'm still very cold aargh!

does the boiler fire on heating only?
does it fire then cut out?
or doesn't it fire?
otherwise you had better tell your husband to see if there is a airlock or get his cash out to pay someone to fix it

just checked but boiler wont fire at the mo,the pipes into it are very hot (cant touch for more than a sec) i take it wont fire coz its too hot & dont need to.
Getting lots of gurgling noises from pipes/boiler as well.

Ill let it cool down then report back as to when it fires ie ch,hw both or neither.

I do appreciate all the replys folks, please keep them coming. Brrrrr

One consolation being it's Valentines day today , you and hubby should be ok. :D

I would imagine the circulating pump is having a bad day.....just becase it may be humming (or whatever) doesn't mean to say that its actually pumping.
You bleed these things by removing the chrome screw in the middle, and then its possible to get a small screwdriver in the hole to check that the impeller inside is spinning briskly.
John :)

ok so now the 1 upstairs rad on the landing is boiling hot, but the rest are still cold :? I have subjected to sitting in the kitchen with the gas hob on for warmth as its warmer than the gas fire in the lounge  And yes John the pump is working fine..even more confused?
