So - my clay soil is now relatively level with a few high spots and a few soft spots.

Plan is to compact MOT with a whacker this weekend to get a flat (slightlg sloping) base on which I will put down some weed membrane and then drop some nice gavel on and maybe build a raised area with sleepers for a small patio.

Anyway - the clay is quite dry - would it help to soak the soil tomorrow prior to whackering on Saturday?

"Slightly sloping" the gravel wont move over time, will it?

If your having more than 75mm of Mot don't bother with a membrane.

Don;t wet it if its clay as it will just sit there. If your Mot is very dry it won;t compact as well so a light spray with a hose is worthwhile but only a very light one as if it gets water logged the plate will just sit still and sink into it.

Thanks for the advice - ill stick to just lightly spraying the mot and leave the clay dry

Regards the slope - it's needs to have a run off for water - nothing major though
