We are about to replace our ancient Gloworm boiler and want your advice on what's deemed the best models on the market today for a 12 radiator typical 4 bedroom house. I've heard lots of stories about various combi's not being able to support good hot water flow, their effectiveness when other taps, appliances or showers are turned on and how the newer models overcome these issues. The more info' the better :D

forget what you have heard, "they" know it all but are not corgi registered.
just ask around, find an installer you trust, and ask him to install a good boiler.

worcester bosch and vaillant are very reliable and popular, but as ben said, get your installer 1st . get some references from him too. ask to see his corgi card and number. that wont guaruntee he's any good but at least your warranty will be in order.

as mentioned its installer preference really. weve been using viessmann vitodens 200's and im impressed, just waiting for the right job for an atag, they are superb.

I would agree with that.

I am a householder

try to get a personal recommendation for an installer, from a friend or neighbour and have a look at his system, but remember most householders won't be able to tell a good job from a not so good (until it goes wrong).

get a couple of comparative quotes, for the same thing. Write down you requirements in advance so they are quoting for the same thing. If you are re-using old pipes and rads it must include a powerflush (which is the best part of a day's work if done properly) and if the old system is dirty, a Magnaclean, Sentinel Filter of Spirovent or similar to catch existing dirt. This will add about £100 to the cost but IMO is worth it.

Your gas and electric suppliers will probably be most expensive but at least you have someone to complain to if not satisfactory and they may include a year or two's service contract in the price.

I chose a manufacturer's approved installer, local firm, corgi registered, premises less than a mile from, my house, well-established company, and it was still not very good.

Maybe I would have done better with a one-man band who did not employ less skilled workmen :(

As a householder, I selected a boiler with stainless steel heat exchanger, not a combi, simple design with very few internal parts on the basis that it had less to go wrong needing a specialist repairer, and with a long guarantee, and I still think that was a good plan.

have to admit im installing the viessman got fed up with WB.if viessman, go for the 200 series though.

I got a 100 compact which is the simplest boiler they make, much simpler than the 100 combi or the 200. There is hardly anything inside the case (about the same price though)

I hear the 100 combi is not up to their usual standard.

difference between the new 100w and the 200 is obviously size but the 200 has more options with weather comp etc. the old 100s did have probs but im hoping were sorted out. speaking with a rep he did note the old 100 was basically made for the uk but the revised 100w is based on the 200 and is made for europe.

Had a Vaillant ecoTEC+ 937 installed in October, so far very pleased with it and it is very quiet indeed.

Atag all the way but they are £££. But the saying goes, buy cheap, buy twice! I haven't yet tried the Broags (which dr drivel is pushing) but they are good from what I have heard.

They are good for their price and the mid market they are aimed at, but not the same quality as Vaillants and way behind ATAG's.
