I read a piece many years ago, where the reason for EP's early demise was gluttony.

He was dirt-poor as a kid, and never knew where his next meal was coming from.
When food did arrive, nothing was left.

When he became rich and food became effectively limitless, he couldn't break the habits formed in childhood.
