What could this be?

Hi everyone

We have just moved into a two bed terrace, in the kitchen downstairs instead of a 90 degree return the wall angles out, it's solid and feels like brick behind the plaster, directly above is the bathroom and in the corner it now changes shape and box like, again it's solid. It just seems a waste of space as the bath is only 1500mmand downstairs I would like to install another wall unit.
Does anyone know why they built them like this and can it be removed?

Soil stack is external and the structure is solid brick and not boxed in

Depends how old the property is but I'd hazard a guess at small fireplace downstairs and chimney up.

Over a hundred years old,it starts in the kitchen and changes shape as it passes through the bathroom

Copper as in what you put water in, sorry - not the flue itself.

The flue will liklely be corbelled masonry.

Yes it's on the rear wall, it goes through the bathroom ceiling, I haven't stuck my head in the loft yet
