Hi all.

Was hoping for some advise regarding a light i bought from Ikea. It's a ceiling light for a kids bedroom but when i came to fit it there was no where for the earth wire to go and nothing mentioned in the very sparse instruction booklet, so was wondering what i do with it?

Thanks

Do you mean that the light fitting has an earth wire but the ceiling fitting doesn't or that the light fitting has no earth wire but the ceiling fitting has?

If the light has an earth wire and the supply cable dos'nt then DO NOT fit the light as it will not be earthed and possibly dangerous. If the other way round then fit a choc bloc to the end of the earth wire(with g/y sleeving over) and tuck away.

Hi thanks for responding.

The light i took down was a 3 way spot light thing and that had a earth connection screw thing on the light it self so now after removing this i have a live, neutural and earth wire poking through a hole in my ceiling were the light was. But the new light has a little connection block fitted inside with 2 holes marked 'L' and 'N' but nowhere on the new light fitting is there a place for the earth wire to go. Does this sound right do places like Ikea supply lights without a place to attach the earth wire.

Cheers

If the light is double insulated (square within a square symbol - please check) and most are from Ikea, then it does not require an earth to be fitted.

Follow wingcoax advice:

"fit a choc bloc to the end of the earth wire(with g/y sleeving over) and tuck away.".

Do not cut it away as you may need it when you fit another fitting.

Does the light, or the instruction leaflet, have a symbol like this on it:

?

If so it doesn't need an earth connection - make it safe as suggested before. Do not cut it off in case you, or someone else, needs it for a non-double insulated light in the future.
