What do I need to break up concrete this thick?

My sons are coming this weekend convinced they can do it with sledge hammers

A Hilti TE 3000-AVR breaker will take it out. It punches with 75 joules!

Mebbe in a few hours or a days work depending on the grade of concrete.

Sledge hammer and some of this the boys will have it broken up in no time.

Dunno about that. Already broke up an 8inch by 24inch line of concrete used to support a fence (yes a bloody fence) it took a whole day for two of us using a Dewalt D25960K 16kg 28mm HEX Demolition Breaker and sledge hammer.

I've got a 100ltr compressor could I use it with an air breaker. It seems air breakers are better than the electric ones and a lot cheaper to hire.

If you have compatible line connections and enough pressure then go for it.

If the conc is 12" thick and decent gear then a sledge will just bounce off it.

Thanks. I'm sure you're right about the sledge. Today we'll find out.

How did the sledge hammering go?

Actually a lot better than I thought as it's not as thick as I believed. The pilot holes I drilled were around the edge where it is 18" think. So some relief. We used a sledge and a medium breaker. Another poster wisely suggested covering up the windows. Well I didnt and the far one got broke. Lesson: Dont be impatient.

I hope thats not the culmination of a days work?

On seeing it now the Hilti would take that out like cheese.
A few hours.
HSS hire them for about £70 quid a day.

It was for two of us.

If I use the bigger breaker what about the house foundations? I dont know how this slab is joined to the wall. If the previous owner put bars into the house foundations what chance of damage to the foundations?

Whilst it packs a pretty heavy punch it won't damage the foundations.

Unless you try and dug under the house, you will be fine.

On the off chance there are steels connecting it to the house (doubtful!), just go around then, then grind them off.

It will take a lot more than a cango to unsettle your house.
