about 5 years ago i fitted new dado skirting and stairs and decided to use a timber stain wax on all of it but now it's time to paint it all.

what can i do to paint it as i am concerned that the paint will not take to it.

any suggestions
 
you could try cleaning the surface with a concentrated sugar soap solution this should remove any remaining grease. Finish with wire/steel wool then a wipe with white spirt to remove any remaining residue.
