I have the Gendan one http://www.gendan.co.uk/product_STN327.html which talks to a number of different types of car (have tried it sucessfully with post 2001 petrol fords & volvos), does the basics i.e. fault code read and MIL reset. Gendan also do more advanced versions aimed towards the pros. Worth a look anyway.

I have the elmscan 5 which is supposed to cover the main 5 protocols.
Have a look on the scanmaster.net website for a list of supported cars before you buy, as most of them are aimed at the american/japanese makes.

I cant scan Vauxhalls with mine for some reason, tried on 3 cars now and doesnt want to know.

Works with VW's, Peugeots and Ford's though (thats all ive tried it on so far)

Snapon Modis is the best buy if you can afford it. and before that it was the snapon heritage.

James,
I paid less than £30 for an OBD II fault code reader off fleabay. Came with fault code book, have used it twice on two different vehicles & it works. Just plug it into your cars OBD port, when your ECU light illuminates. Only covers the basic fault codes, but I'm happy with that.
