Help! I have been reading up about boilers - including the Which? survey for Sept 08 - also have phoned some manufacturers - but am still confused about what boiler to use. I have a flat which has communal hot water - so I need only a heating boiler - i.e. a System boiler - but do not want a cylinder - again because I am in a flat.
Glow-worm have told me their System boilers definitely require a cylinder but other manufactures have usually first said I need a cylinder but when I explain I don't want one - then say I really do not need one.
Any info./ advice appreciated.

naw they dont

you can have any heat only boiler just on a heating system (open vented or sealed)

dont need a cylinder

Yes that makes sense.

I thought it would be better to have a system boiler with a pressurised heating circuit rather than a regular boiler with an open vented circuit.

why?

what difference would that make :)

I don't know to be honest

I was always of the impression that a sealed pressurised system is better :)

Maybe there's nowhere to locate a open expansion tank in the flat and so the only choice is a system boiler? This would mean that David937 is right!

I would agree that a system boiler is usually the better option.

Once the air is out no more should get in, no F&E tank to keep water aerated.

System should stay cleaner longer when pressurised.

That is tripe. You need a system boiler, only heating the CH. No cylinder is needed. All you do is fit the system boiler and run the flow to rads and the return back from the rads. No valves or pumps fitted externally. Super simple. Some boilers have controllers that do the timing and and temperature and modulate the burner as well.

A system boiler has the pump and expansion vessel inside the casing.

not really

saves having to put in a F&E tank above the boiler so easier to site a system boiler in the loft

less evapouration too I suppose

I just fitted an Alpha 13r for myself, heating only on an open vented system, although you can also get the sealed system kit.

Very pleased, nice little boiler.

See My letter in PhamNews
