what type of floor covering?

In my sons kitchen/dinner, part of the floor is old red marley tiles (where the old small kitchen was) and the other is floorboards level with the tiled area. The electrics in the floorboarded area run underneath.
Can anyone suggest a good covering and what do we need to do to either the tiles or floorboards as preperation?

Depends what you like, really and how much you want to spend. Eg. Do you want both floors with the same covering? One hard, one soft? Do you have pets? Etc. I've just had a kitchen covered over with ply which makes a good surface for most things.
