I wish to remove this kitchen light fitting which takes large screw fit tungsten spot light bulbs. The bulbs can be angled too. Does the unit have clips like modern downlights, or is there some other way to remove it?

Considering that the ceiling needs replastering to fit smaller downlights, I could just smash it to pieces and pull the plaster down with it, but I'd prefer to use a bit more finesse as it will be a couple of days before the plasterer turns up.

Usually large plastic clips, similar to modern down lights.

The paint is likely holding it firm.

Stanley the paint, and pull forward. Or get your hammer.....

That looks like artex and POSSIBLY asbestos, so taking a hammer to it is BAD advise.
If that was a council house they would get specialist contracters in to remove that ceiling if it was ever damaged

Carefully trim the off the paint sealing it and get a driver behind it and lever and pull fitting downwards, it will either come out, break ceiling a bit or break the clips, proberly plastic.

If your concerned wear a mask and avoid getting covered in the dust
