What would cause electric shower to trip?

Lots of things.
What is actually tripping? Is it an mcb? Or an RCBO? Or an RCCB?
Write out all the info on the device that actually trips.
And also tell us how powerful the shower is, in either kW, or W.

Several things, a failed heating element, loose connections water ingress onto internal electrics.

Miniature circuit breaker (Mcb)
Residual current circuit breaker (rccb)
Residual current breaker over-current (rcbo)
All found at the consumer unit (fuse board/box) - maybe post a photo of this indicating which has tripped.

Yes.
But by 'trip', do you mean MCB, RCBO, or RCCB?
If you tell us everything printed on the 'trip', and also the kW or W of the shower itself, we can try to diagnose what's happening more speedily.
