I don't think you need the smartphone at all once it's all set upThen when it finally disconnects on the PC, what - borrow another smart phone?

Never said you can’t use it alone , just you need a phone number .

Just get a smartphone. It isn’t that hard to use it.thanks everyone, i will just have to do without
WhatsApp, compared to other social media apps, isn’t so distracting. Recently, they had added a channels function though, which can sometimes appeal to you and take up your time.which is probably a good thing, I would just waste my time on it

considering the cabbages obsessed by them, they obviously they can't be difficult to use.
Didn’t mention screen casting either .Yeah, you need a phone number to install it on your phone and then you need the same phone to establish a trust relationship with the pc/browser, but other than that, the phone could be in a completely different location. It is not simply screen casting. Sorry mate, you said it is not a stand alone app. You are correct that you need a compatible phone but it definitely isn't a case of screen casting. I seldom use WA, but, yeah, I would prefer to use it on my PC. That said, I prefer my laptop for most tasks. The phone is more convenient because it is my pocket, but the laptop has far more real estate.

I find it fantastic.Apart from simple text messages, you can share photos, links/URL's to webpages etc..

I can send a simple text message, forward stuff from one person to another, copy text, set up groups, send pictures and videos. You can send someone your exact location, forward them details of one of your contacts, send a recorded voice note instead of a typed one, or you can speak your message and the phone will type it for you and send events from your calendar. Even if you want to send documents, you can. My phone is connected wirelessly to the printer so when I get a doc, I can just print it off direct from my phone no bother.
I wonder whether it behaves differently if you use the computer WhatsApp app rather than the website? As a test, I just went to the WA web site. It is asking me to use my phone to set up the trust relationship (again). The last time that I used WA on a browser was less than a year ago.
That said, I seldom use the app. Digital noise (IMO). I do understand why people use it though.
