What's causing this?

Strange staining on gable end of sandstone villa. There are two downstairs gas fires which have flues through this chimney. What might be causing this weird stain?

HaHa! Yup, got that! Any idea how it's getting where it's getting? Gutters are all OK....

Via the chimney by the looks, seeing as the chimney looks like its been saturated for years ..... Any cap/cowl on the pot? How's the leadworks or dpc round the chimney etc?
 
Could water be getting into the chimney then soak out under the flashing and the roof slates onto the top of the wall?
 
It looks like the water coming down the chimney gable end is missing the gutter
does the stain not dry out when the fire is on?
