What's happened to the small boats?

If this news piece is to be believed, Brexit was partly to blame for lack of action:

Smuggling gangs have long used garages or warehouses to store equipment in western Germany before transporting it to northern France. Until recently, however, key anti-smuggling laws in Germany only applied to nations within the EU's zone of free movement, not to third countries, which included the UK after Brexit.

The claim was that Brexit was to blame. The cause of the problem.

It’s beyond nonsense.
No, it's cause and effect.

Of course, the few remaining Brexers try to deny the damage they have caused, and which they are now moaning about.

What does that prove? Correlation is not causation.

There was absolutely no link, other than that Boris & Co thought there would be a shortage of workers as a result of Brexit so stupidly panicked and threw the borders open to anyone. There was no need, or at best it was a massive over-reaction.

There's a graph somewhere that shows the similar rise in cases of breast cancer and the number of street lights installed, they correlate perfectly. Obviously there's absolutely no link between the two, but it's a good example of how halfwits can be fooled by a graph.

The only possible link I can think of between Brexit and the small boats is that it's known that the people smugglers previously made use of the trucks going from France to the UK. Increased checks on imports and exports since Brexit may make it more likely for them to be found, so they've turned to the boats instead.

It's perfectly possible that the only change is that illegal immigration was always going on but has become much more visible as a result of Brexit.

There are still other invisible routes too, e.g. EU to Ireland, catch a bus to Northern Ireland then get the ferry to GB. Usually no passport or ID needed at any point. Join the vast UK black market for work, much more easily and safely and this won't feature in any statistics.
