Having some work done on the sewers, while the guys have got it dug up I wondered if you could get a thingy that prevents the sewage from backing up, a bit like a back draught shutter on an extractor fan. The reason for this is that some years ago, there was a problem with the sewers round here, resulting in sewage backing up through all the houses toilets.... nice! Anyhow, if you can get them.

1) Is it worth doing, i.e. do they work, do they cause problems such a blockages themselves?

2) What are they called?

3) Do they need any maintenence? I'd image an inspection chamber would be advisable.

Ta, muchly for any advice.

You don't want any sort of restriction in a sewer. An inspection chamber for rodding is always handy. Google will show you what's available.

chris is right you dont want one.

some london borough drains do have anti flood valves to shut of drains during high demand though but dont think they will let you have one :)

Fair enough, thought that would probably be the case. Thanks for the advice.

Well I'm blowed, I stand corrected. Presumably the float is out of the way of the "normal" flow.
I know the flappy things foul up.
Nice maintanance job making sure...
