I have a 3ft post and rail fence which sperates the paths between my house and my neighours. The rails are currently nailed to one side of the posts and with the slats addeed it isn't centred evenly and means the fence encroaches over one of the paths.

As the fence needs a little repair due to storm damage I was looking at attaching the rails in between the posts rather than specifically on one side but to do this I would need brackets but which ones.

As the kids will no doubt end up standing on the rails would L brackets be strong enough or would I need to use U brackets and where would I get them from?

Wicks or even a local timber yard that supplies fencing could have a variety of brackets you could check out so try them first.

I once had a job where they had a similar problem and though the brackets available were weak, so i headed to the local iron mongers and bought a length of thicker and larger angled mild steel, they cut it to the sizes i wanted so all i had to do drill them and bang i had my own large strong brackets from it.

It was actually quite cheap per unit (3 meters of 50mm x 50mm x 3mm mild steel is less than £20 and you are not likely to need that much so just work out the size you want and calculate quantity then tell the monger ) but that was without factoring in the time i needed drilling the screw holes in them obviously.

Crappy thin and weak timber brackets at wickes are 49p each lol:
