Hi all. The centre piece to turn water on/off for this tap has almost disintegrated. I used to use pliers to open and close as none of the keys i had ever fitted!. I'd like to replace this whole thing with a standard tap. I don't know if it is just a case of taking this whole fitting off and screwing in the new one or whether i need to do further prep work. Appreciate any comments thanks.

It's a crappy cheap washing machine tap, not at all suitable to be used there.
Get rid of it.
You should have a check (non-return valve) I forget the type (single or double), @denso13 corrected me last time. It can be inside the house or inside the tap iirc. You may have one, but I highly doubt the botcher who did that, used one.

Anything "proper" put there is going to stick out further, this
with an outside tap screwed in might be neatest.
You can't just screw an new tap on, the fitting's wrong, so a little plumbing is required.

That's a washing machine valve so you've got an olive connection against the wall.

I'd start over if it was me. You could go with a compression to male thread followed by a female female thread coupling and a tap in the end but it will flap about with a hose hung on the end of it.

Should be a double check valve which could be in the tap if it is just the tap replacement. Strictly speaking I think it should be fitted inside in this instance.

Fitting a compression elbow on the existing nut and olive and going up/down to the tap should almost work. It should also have an isolation valve inside and a drain off point somewhere.

Wow ok thank you for these comments. Its been like this since we brought the property 20 years ago! Inside it is just fed off a connection just before the toilet pipe as in pic. Ok I think a bit of work required here then which may be outside of my skillet. Thanks again for the responses!
