which lining paper?

Hi
I'm repainting my lounge and have been advised to put lining paper up first. The walls are in pretty good state but i just wanted to see what grade people suggest.
Some have told me use the thickest that you can find, others have said that thick doesnt give as good a finish as the mid thickness stuff,
Please help?

I have always used "800" grade lining paper. Put on sideways of course this helps to take your eye away from where you would think the joins would be if they were vertical. Using the thicker lining paper doesnt always hide the imperfections on a wall and can sometimes make them more noticable.
Cross lining also helps when putting wallpaper over the top as it helps to strengthen the wall and makes sure that joints wont coincide with each other.

It depends how bad your walls are, but I have used the 800, 1000 1200 and 1400, never got round to using the 1700 as yet.
Me personally, I love the 1200 and 1400 paper, I just love the finish result when its painted.

A neighbour of mine said they hated lining paper, as it looks like paper , so I invited him in, and he said 'thats the effect I want', imagine his suprise when I said, 'cough cough' 'thats 1400 lining paper'.

I know 1200 and 1400 has more texture, but if you dont have an orange peel effect with your paint, then it can and does look very classy.

all my house is done in 1400, and when I do jobs, I always use 1200 or 1400, but I thin the paint down and use a medium pile roller to get a flatter finish.
