White alarm/phone cable, how professionals hide it

Hi,

Just wondering how professional alarm companies hide the cable, I’ve seen it before where it’s against the wall but not inside the wall but still looks not too bad. All cable in my house is hidden but I’d like to add some additional cable going up and around the perimeter of bathroom and utility room to power (low voltage harvested from a clip on CT) a wireless device which communicates with the EV charger in the garage. Any advice appreciated. The cable is supposed to be cat 5 twisted pair.

What is above the bath/ utility room?

If you can, go above, be it in the loft or under the floor above.

Or, if you have a suspended timber floor, go below.

If you can do neither, what I used to do was try and conceal the cable in the corner between walls or wall and coving, wall and architrave, wall and skirting etc.
I use a Rapid staple gun using U staples and then sometimes if the customer is decorating, I would fill either side of the cable with a quick-drying ready mixed filler or caulk. Once dry and painted, it looks well concealed.

There’s some space for cables above the ceiling/below the floor but that’s not what I’m asking.

Well, speaking as someone who has installed hundreds of alarm systems and miles and miles of cables, it's better (if you can) to hide them altogether rather than install them on the surface and try to conceal them.

You did ask: how do professionals hide it?

I have given you both answers: ideally the best way is to hide it altogether in the fabric of the building.

If you absolutely cannot, you can run it in plain sight and use means to conceal it.

BUT...the bigger the cable, the harder this task becomes.

Thanks all, seems like most installers are better than I’ve heard (I’ve never needed to use one as alarm was already fitted - this is similar cable but for a wireless comms device for EV charger).

Is putting the cable in the ceiling as difficult as I imagine? Would need to make quite a few large holes in order to get cable through walls and smaller (but still hand size) ones to feed cable along.

Installers are under time/cost pressure, and so do the quick route. DIY you have time to do a much better job, and time to plan the work/take what ever time it needs.

In the end I got the EV charger installer to tidy up the cables and this is what they did, it’s quite visible but looks OK so I’m happy with it.
